Other tales

During our travels on and around the Berwyn we have come across many mythical tales, from the Phantom bomber to the dogs of darkness. In this section we will write up some of these shortened stories.

The Phantom bomber.

Late last night I was flipping through the pages of 'UFO Down' by Andy Roberts looking at new avenues to explore for the blog, three words just jumped out at me, 'the phantom bomber', oh god, I thought.
When I was younger I had a love-hate outlook on ghost stories. By day I would be gripped by them and by night the ghosts would be in my wardrobe, keeping me awake. Last night after reading those three words the ghosts were back, something had clicked a childhood memory had come back to me.

I'm 10 years old and I'm sitting around a table with my friends, our hands are on a up turned pint glass. "Is there anybody there?" we shout - nothing, we shout again, "is there anybody there?" the candle dims and the glass comes alive "I am a pilot" is spelt out in front of us, yeah right, I think one of the older lads is trying to scare me. "Who are you?" we ask, the glass moves again "I was killed in a plane crash" we all look at each other, someone must be playing games. One by one we start to take our hands off the glass, the glass continues to move "no" is written. Mine is the only hand left on the glass now, someone shouts "where?" the glass comes alive again, "Hendwr" I don't want to play any more everybody knows I cant spell, its time to smash the glass.

Its mad I only made this connection last night, We didn't know of a plane crash in Hendwr - ofcouse Hendwr is located at the foot of the Berwyn mountains - until I wrote the Fallen eagles chapter of this blog. Maybe Mulder is right.

The Dogs of darkness.

An unknown phenomenon that’s been haunting the foothills of the Berwyn Mountains for decades...

As you all know by now myself and Mulder are always on the lookout for new stories to scare ourselves with. This story stretches back decades with people still reporting sightings today!
Rumours have talked of a man returning from an annual fair in Cynwyd years ago on horseback chased by a ‘Black Hound’ who is thought to patrol the lonely roads in Wales.
The hound kept close to the man all the way, who himself was rushing to get back home as soon as he possibly could. He said that it resembled “a beast of fearsome visage and blood-shot eye.” After quite a chase through the moorland, the deadhead climax never came and he eventually reached his farm gate of Cyrchynan Uchaf unscathed, turning to see that the black hound had vanished.

Another strange experience that appears in Trevor O. Jones book - O Ferwyn I Fynyllod. This talks of the Hill Ghost in Tyn y Wern Bach that materialises in the form of a large dog. Drinkers from the old pub the Stamp would be coming home late on most occasions reporting sightings of large dogs following them. It is believed that on one instance, a group from the pub had ventured up the hill to witness something dark appearing on the horizon. What they saw stopped the horses dead in their tracks making them resistant to proceed any further.

What is certain is that on the foothills of the Berwyn, on the moors and back roads to your homes, there are dark and unknown dog like creatures patrolling the night!

More so is that the area of the Berwyn Mountains, holds clues to many of Wales’ most answered questions.
